CARE OF YOUR NEW DANDRPOMS PUPPY
The following is the information sheet for new owners of family members (Pomeranians) from dandrpoms. Please print a copy of this page and refer to as needed. If you have any other questions, or require any other information please email dandrpoms@aol.com or call 330-889-3662.
WORMING: Your Pomeranian puppy has been wormed at 4, 5, 6, 8, & 10 weeks of age . Please check with your vet for his recommendations on future worming schedule and which product he wants you to use. I recommend worming again at 12 weeks and then once a month each month after. I try and pick a day like the 1st of each month etc. That makes it easier to remember.
IMMUNIZATION: Your puppy has been vaccinated and you will be given a vaccination record. The card lists which vaccines were used and the date it was given. It should also give the date for any booster vaccinations.Take this record with you to your veterinarian. He will also keep adding information to it for your future reference.
HEARTWORM: Your new Pomeranian puppies are not yet given heartworm preventatives. Ask your veterinarian about when to place your Pomeranian on heartworm preventative . I use the once a month heart guard preventative.
REGISTRATION AND PEDIGREE: Your Pomeranian puppy is registered with the American Kennel Club - AKC. Your Pomeranian will be fully registered by us, unless other arrangements are made. AKC Certificates may be issued for pet only poms.
TEETH CARE: I clean my Pomeranians teeth on a regular basis. Use a toothbrush - a child's small soft one. Don't ever use human toothpaste. You can get “doggie” toothpaste from your local vet, pet supply store, even WalMart. Start cleaning your puppy’s teeth right away so he /she will adjust to this process and accept it easily.
GROOMING: Your Puppy has been groomed from the beginning. They love the undivided attention. Start with short, pleasant periods of time. if possible, spend daily time grooming at first. The pom does require regular grooming at least 2 or 3 times a week. During heavy shedding periods, daily brushing will keep the loose hair minimal.
When you stroke or pat your Pomeranian, stroke the coat from the tail to the head occasionally. This will raise the dense coat. Teach your baby from a young age to accept and enjoy being groomed.
Occasional bathing is recommended with a shampoo specially made for dogs. A tearless puppy shampoo is the best to use. As they grow there are speciality shampoos for all kinds of dogs. You may choose one of those if you would like. Make sure to dry out your puppy/s ears after bathing.
Trimming of hair around the anus for cleanliness is recommended and is regularly done by dandrpoms. We also trim the hair on the paws to make nail care easier.
Toe nails should be kept as short as possible.
FEEDING: Pomeranians are tiny bundles of energy. I recommend that you feed your pup at least 3 times per day, plus have a quality dry food and water available at all times.. I leave puppy dry food available at all times e.g. Pedigree puppy food
Water MUST be available at all times.
Never feed your puppy cooked chicken bones or table scraps
I am sure that your new Pomeranian Baby will bring much joy into your life.

Tips for Potty Training
Many people comment that their puppies potty train pretty quickly after they arrive. Puppies usually catch on pretty fast. However, here are a few tips to help make the challenge of potty training a little easier:
1. Be persistent
2. Be consistent
3. Offer rewards and encouragement when the puppy is successful, instead of
punishment for accidents
4. Use a simple command/phrase such as "outside" or “Go potty!” and give lots of
praise when he/she does his/her deed
5. Offer potty time frequently
6. Set up a routine. Offer potty breaks every time the puppy wakes eats or drinks or
has been confined for a long period of time—any movement stimulates things
7. Do not let the puppy have full reign of the house until fully potty trained usually
around 6 months of age.
From the time they are born and begin to walk, the puppies are trained to puppy pads in their playpen/whelping crates —separated from their bed. They are trained to potty outside as well as weather permits.
Poms usually adapt to a variety of methods including potty pads indoors and going outside and possibly even litter box training. There are even some new products on the market such as the Potty Park. My brother-in-law placed a bell by the door.
They will ring the bell every time the puppy goes out to potty and eventually the puppy will learn to associate that with potty time and ring it when he/she needs to go.
Remember that some accidents may happen from time to time during training.
If a puppy soils an area, it is critical to clean it thoroughly—so the smell does not linger and attract the puppy back to the spot. Vinegar, baking soda and soap are helpful to clean the spot and take away odors. There are also several other products on the market that work well but be quick, and through in your cleaning!
Potty training a puppy is very similar to potty training a child. It just takes a little time, love, persistence, and patience.
